There has been quite a bit of buzz about this brew recently, and now we have a nice supply in the store. You'll probably love it or hate it, and some of that will depend on how you feel about honey. Beer Advocate member Redneckchugger put it well, "This beer was better than I expected. Looked okay in the glass, bronzey body, decent head, Nice nose, like orange peels dipped in quality honey. Tasted just like honey, almost too sweet, bordered on cloying, but it pulled it off, some orange in the back ground. Way better beer than I was expecting it to be."

Samuel Adams Imperial White $10.99/4-pack 12 oz. bottles
Origin: Massachusetts.
Style: Witbier.
Alcohol Content: 10.3%.
Beer Advocate Rating: B.
Brewery notes: "This beer has a lot going on. Brewed with 50% malted wheat and two-row Harrington and Metcalfe malted barley, this beer has a bigger body and mouthfeel than a traditional witbier. We've added a number of spices into this brew, not only during brewing for depth, but also during fermentation. The rest of the flavors come from the yeast and the alcohol. As this beer warms and opens up, you start to get flavors of complex flavors of dry fruits, exotic spices, and floral blossoms. These are flavors typically associated with wine and spirits, but they are showcased in Imperial White as a bouquet of flavors. Imperial White is really a versatile beer when it comes to pairing with food. Its wheat and cereal-like flavors can easily complement a savory roasted chicken with lemon and pepper. Or the spices in the beer can match the intensity of a curry dish or thai cuisine."

From the Ommegang Brewery: "Three Philosophers is a unique and masterful blend of strong malty ale and authentic Belgian Kriek (cherry lambic). Our philosophers deduce that this powerful marriage of cherries, roasted malts, and dark chocolate will only achieve more wisdom and coherence as it broods in the dark recesses of your cellar. Pair with roasted meats, rich cheeses, desserts, or enjoy for after dinner sipping as with a fine port." The Philadelphia Enquirer wrote, "A rare international blend of dark and malty quadrupel from Ommegang, and cherry-infused lambic from Lindemans in Belgium. It is a masterful blend that is greater than the sum of its parts - a rich, ruby brew that weaves a port-like subtle fruit into a creamy elixir of chocolaty caramel effervescence."
Samuel Adams Double Bock (Imperial Series) $10.99/4-pack 12 oz. bottles
Origin: Massachusetts.
Style: Doppelbock.
Alcohol Content: 9.5%.
Beer Advocate Rating: B+.
Brewery notes: "Samuel Adams Double Bock, as with all of the beers in the Imperial Series, is brewed using only first wort (wort that has not been sparged in the lauter tun) to obtain a liquid that is very high in gravity. This high gravity allows for a fuller body and higher alcohol content in the final beer. We age this beer for over 4 weeks to allow all of those intense flavors to develop and mature. For it's inclusion in the Imperial Series, we've amped up the recipe for Double Bock a little to reach 9.5% ABV, but you still get those complex rich flavors that define the style. Harrington, Metcalfe and Caramel 60 malted barely is used to obtain that gorgeous mahogany color and intense flavor. The malt character is balanced with a subtle piney, citrus hop note from the Tettnang Tettnanger and Tettnang Hallertauer hops. The intense flavors of Double Bock go well with rich meats like duck, quail or pork tenderloin. You can also match the rich sweet flavors with some hearty desserts like cheesecake."

Brother Thelonius Belgian Style Abbey Ale $7.99/750 ml. bottle
Origin: California.
Style: Dubbel.
Alcohol Content: 9.4%.
Beer Advocate Rating: B+.
The Boston Phoenix says, "This one's a beaut, pouring a dark cola color (and, forgivably, with a cola consistency - a thin mouthfeel and minimal head retention). But it smells sweet and strong, redolent of brown sugar, with a hint of molasses and the tang of spice. And like the knotty compositions of the man itself, its flavor is deep and complex: a rum-like boozy kick here, a chocolaty richness there, the pleasing bite of nutmeg, clove, and pepper over that way." And dig this, "When you buy Brother Thelonious, you help to support the Thelonious Institute whose mission is to offer the world's most promising young musicians college level training by America's jazz masters and to present public school-based jazz education programs for young people around the world. All of these programs are offered free of charge to the students and schools." - North Coast Brewing.

Beer Advocate Rating: B+.

Samuel Adams Imperial Stout $10.99/4-pack 12 oz. bottles
Origin: Massachusetts.
Style: American Double.
Alcohol Content: 9.2%.
Beer Advocate Rating: A-.
Brewery notes: "The first thing you notice about this beer is its color. It is black as night and almost completely opaque. Next is the cappuccino colored head: the aroma is filled with notes of coffee, smoky chocolate and licorice. And the taste delivers on all of those aromas, you can pick out each one. Samuel Adams Imperial Stout was brewed with seven different varieties of malted barley, each delivering its own unique flavor for the beer. But this beer is not a 'malt bomb'. It is balanced by 50 BUs of East Kent Goldings hops that have a clean earthy aroma and pleasant bitterness. For a cheese pairing, try aged strong cheeses like Stilton blue cheese or aged Gouda. Cioppino or rare roast beef will also pair well as they will cut some of the sweetness of the beer. The dark roasted malt in the Imperial Stout brings out chocolate aromas and flavors making it a tasty pairing with coffee or chocolate desserts. But the classic pairing for stouts are a plate of raw oysters. The roasted bitterness of the stout is contrasted by the saltiness and subtle sweetness from the shellfish. Simply amazing."

Origin: Colorado.
Style: American Double.
Alcohol Content: 9.1%.
Beer Advocate Rating: A-.
Brewery notes: "Hoppier, maltier and with more alcohol than a standard IPA, Hercules Double IPA definitely is not for the faint of heart. Hercules Double IPA is, however, an elixir fit for the gods. A brash but creamy wonder, Hercules pours a deep orange-coppery color, forming substantial lace in the glass. Hercules Double IPA delivers a huge amount of piney, floral, and citrusy hop aroma and flavor from start to finish. A hefty backbone of nutty, toffee-like malt character balances Hercules’ aggressive, punchy hop profile. 85 IBU's."

Beer Advocate Rating: B+.
What sets this brew apart is being aged in Jefferson's Reserve small batch barrels for approximately 60 days. The malt sweetness is perfectly balanced by the roast barley and a nice hint of bourbon flavor and aroma. This bourbon barrel stout was first brewed December 22, 2005. The color is deep dark brown/black with a frothy cappucino head. The aromas reveal hints of bourbon along with roasted notes and some vanilla. Chocolate reveals itself on the tongue along with some bourbon sweetness, and whiffs of smokiness arrive in the aftertaste. This is not a heavy stout; in fact the brewery describes it as silky.

Origin: California.
Style: American Strong Ale.
Alcohol Content: 7.2%.
Beer Advocate Rating: A-.
First introduced in November, 1997, this is an aggressive beer. Hugely complex, deep reddish brown, frothy and stick, there's a lot going on between the hops and malt in this brew. Beer Advocate Todd Alström says, "Medium bodied, yet rich, full and complex. Smooth, especially as it warms. Big malty sweetness with caramel, chocolate and toasted/roasted flavours. Alcohol prickliness teases the palate then the brew kicks its ass with an assertive hop profile. It's raw, coarse, a bit prickly itself, mildly rind-like. Helps to balance the huge malt flavours. Finishes with a lingering sweetness, caramel, roasted coffee. A bit grain/dry too."

Oak anchors the big malty sweet flavors and carries thru to the dry finish with strong notes of wood. The aging added a whole other depth of complexity and smoothness to the beer."

Brewery notes: "This mildly-spiced, toasted-caramel ale is arguably one of the tawniest lagers around. It is a malt beer brewed for consumption and sometimes dubbed as liquid bread since monks developed this style of beer to help them fast during the lenten season. The Commemorator is as rich and robust as the 100 years of heritage it represents."
Dale's Pale Ale $9.99/6-pack 12 oz. cans
Origin: Colorado.
Style: American IPA.
Alcohol Content: 6.5%.
Beer Advocate Rating: B+.
From Oskar Blue's Cajun Grill & Brewery in Lyons, Colorado. Brewery notes: " Dale's Pale Ale is America's first hand-canned craft beer. It's an assertive but deftly balanced beer (somewhere between an American pale ale and an India Pale Ale) brewed with hefty amounts of European malts and American hops. It features a merengue-like head, a copper color, and a hoppy nose, thanks to a big post-boil addition of Centennial hops. To complement its hoppy first impression, Dale's also sports a rich middle of malts and hops, and a bracing finish. Dale's features 65 International Bittering Units." OMG! A great beer from a CAN!
