Have you started planning your wedding reception and the events surrounding the special day? If you’re having your reception catered, be sure to shop around to find the best price not only for the food, but for any alcohol that will be served. If you plan on serving drinks at your reception, you’ll want to be mindful of the venue, the server and the size of the crowd you’ll be serving.
Know the Rules of Thumb for Alcohol
There is a rule of thumb when purchasing alcohol for a large number of people. If you know their tastes this makes it easier, but if you don’t it’s a crap shoot. You may hit the mark, or you might not. Caterers figure guests will consume one drink per hour. This means if you have 100 guests, prepare to have enough alcohol for 100 drinks every hour. This is the easy part. To further break it down consider that one-third may drink wine, one-third beer, and the last third liquor.
A Simple Plan for Your Alcohol Purchase
For every 100 guests attending your wedding and reception, plan on a three-hour period of celebration. To cover all this, you will need the following:
- Take a hundred bottles of beer from the wall, and you will be able to take care of your beer drinkers for three hours. That’s a little over four cases. Mix it up with well-known brands such as Budweiser or Miller Light as well as a variety of niche brews such as Blue Moon or Leinenkugel.
- You will also need about two cases of wine and two each of the base liquors. These would be two clear liquors like tequila and vodka, two brown liquors such as whiskey and rum. (Don’t forget the scotch drinker if you have one in the crowd!)
- For mixers, you will need lime and orange juice, grenadine, vermouth (both dry and sweet), margarita mix and someone who knows what to do with it all to run your bar.
- The bare minimum of sparkling wine with which to toast the newlyweds would come to a little over a dozen bottles.
